DIPLOMA of OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY and HEALTH – BSB 51604
The Diploma of Occupational Safety and Health aims to give participants more specialised knowledge in specific areas within the field of occupational safety and health. It is a nationally endorsed qualification that is part of the Business Services Training Package.
Successful completion of eight units is required to gain this qualification. The competencies required for the Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety have been endorsed by the National Quality Council and build upon the skills and knowledge developed in the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for all Units of Competence upon application.
OBJECTIVE
This course will provide
participants with the practical skills and knowledge to work within the field of
occupational safety and health as an OSH coordinator/practitioner. Participants
will learn skills that will enable them to participate in a systematic approach
to managing occupational safety and health within the workplace.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
As a result of this
program, participants should be able to:
• Effectively participate in the
coordination and maintenance of a systematic approach to managing OSH in the
workplace;
• Identify and utilise the different sources of OSH data available
within and outside an organisation;
• Assist in the design and development of
effective participative arrangements;
• Apply principles of OSH risk
management by providing a systematic approach to hazard identification, risk
assessment and risk control;
• Manage and control specific hazards in the
work environment;
• Monitor and facilitate the management of hazards
associated with plant;
• Facilitate the application of principles of
occupational health to control OSH risk; and
• Participate in the planning,
conduct and reporting of investigations of accidents.
KEY SUBJECT AREAS
The following eight Units
of Competence will be available:
BSBOHS501A* - Participate in the
coordination and maintenance of a systematic approach to managing
OHS
BSBOHS502A* - Participate in the management of the OHS information and
data systems
BSBOHS503A* - Assist in the design and development of OHS
participative arrangements
BSBOHS504A* - Apply principles of OHS risk
management
BSBOHS505A* - Manage hazards in the work environment
BSBOHS506A
- Monitor and facilitate the management of hazards associated with
plant
BSBOHS507A - Facilitate the application of principles of occupational
health to control OHS risk
BSBOHS508A* - Participate in the investigation of
incidents
*Note: Five out of these six are compulsory
units.
DURATION
The contact time for this program
is four weeks. Courses are scheduled in two week blocks with students able to
attend one week at a time if desired. Organisations wishing to undertake the
diploma as a corporate course can negotiate a different schedule to suit their
needs.
ASSESSMENT
There is an assessment component
for each unit. All assessment components require a reasonable amount of time
studying, implementing processes and developing portfolios of evidence.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for all Units of
Competence upon application.
DESIGNED FOR
OSH co-ordinators whose role is
to co-ordinate and maintain the organisation’s Occupational Safety and Health
Management System. This role includes strategies, policies and procedures
necessary to systematically coordinate and maintain OSH to ensure that the
workplace is, as far as practicable, safe and without risks to the safety and
health of employees and others. Participants are required to have the
underpinning knowledge and skills relevant to the Certificate IV in Occupational
Health and Safety (BSB41604) program. This incorporates the need to have sound
English literacy skills and be able to use a computer proficiently.
